It should be noted that taking a position as a Multi-Activity Instructor on our summer camp scheme is the best route to getting onto our Trainee Instructor Scheme.
7 of the 7 Trainees in the 2012 Trainee Scheme came from the summer camp staff and all applications from the summer camp staff with be given 1st consideration for the 2013 Trainee Positions.

This post is ideal for anyone aspiring to be an Outdoor Instructor or anyone with interests in the outdoors who would like the experience of working with children. The ideal candidate would have experience working with groups and skills in one or more outdoor areas (canoeing and/or climbing experience an advantage) though most important will be a proven passion for the outdoors.
We will provide full training in all our on-site activities.
The succesful candidates will be at both sites during their contract (transport provided or mileage paid), working Monday to Friday with one evening duty and all weekends off. This post is not for someone who is looking for a summer job where they get to do activities all day and it’s just a bit of a laugh! This post involves the instructor having a great deal of responsibility, it is hard work but for the right person it is extremely rewarding. We take our staff training and professional development very seriously, High Adventure has an excellent reputation for the quality of our staff because of this. If you have a real desire to work in the outdoors and the maturity to be responsible for the safety of a group in your care then this is a fantastic summer job where you will meet like minded people.
Minimum age is 18 at the point of your application.
Renumeration: £150 per week (including all food,camp fees and travel between camps)

Yorkshire Dales – to start in January 2013
Trainee Outdoor Instructors (6 positions – 3 male & 3 female)
APPLICATIONS will in the FIRST instance be taken from staff who worked on one of our Summer Multi Activity Camps (Lakes / Staffordshire)
Start Date: January 2013 (12 month contract – with the possibility to continue onto the Developing Instructor Scheme – see our website for more details)
Selection Process: We ‘select’ our ‘trainees’ via a week long (7 day) trial at High Adventure. During this week you will spend time with a variety of different members of HA staff and get to experience a variety of different activities / tasks. The intention of this process is for you to fully understand & appreciate what is involved whilst working at HA and to allow us to get to know you and see what makes you tick. To get an invitation to this ‘selection week’ you will in the first instance need to send your CV to jobs@highadventureoec.co.uk in order to request an Application Form.
Pay: £300 per month + Board & Lodgings + Registration fees & log book fees to the relevant National Governing Bodies + Training & Assessment fees for the relevant NGB Awards (as per below) + £385 technical clothing allowance. An additional £100 – 200 pcm is available through the working tax credit scheme for all succesful applicants over the age of 25.
During the year you will be expected to work towards your National Governing Body qualifications in the following:
- Climbing: Single Pitch Award
- Caving: Level 1 Local Cave Leaders Award
- Canoeing: Level 1 Canoe Coach, 1 star, 2 star & 3 star Canoe, Canoe Safety Test, Level 2 Canoe Coach (if your ability is proven)
- Mountain Biking: Level 1 (Trail Leader) & Level 2 (Technical Leader)
- 1st Aid
- Minibus Driving (PCV) – Registration to the DVLA, Medical Examination, PCV Theory Test (so that you are ready for your PCV Minibus Practical Test)
Added to these will be training and assessment in
- High Ropes Course
- Low Ropes Course
- Archery
- Orienteering
- Indoor Climbing Wall
- Abseil Platform
- Team Building & Problem Solving
- GCSE delivery of Mountain Biking; Climbing; Canoeing & Orienteering
- Hill Walking / Local Adventure Walk
- Gorge Walking / Canyoning
With training & continued professional development in all areas surrounding the work required of an instructor in a medium sized outdoor education centre.
The position comes with domestic duties which should not be overlooked, the domestic duties involve working every other weekend in a domestic capacity.
Your duties would include food delivery & cleaning the centre during the weekend.
High Adventure Outdoor Education Centre is a medium sized centre sitting on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales (5 miles south of Skipton). Catering for School & Youth groups, Stag & Hen weekend groups & Corporate groups.
Applicants must be 21 and have a full driving licence as well as a drive to succeed within the outdoor industry, we are not looking to take on anyone with the notion of this becoming some sort of gap year type option. Only applicants that can demonstrate that they are wanting to enter the outdoor industry for the long term will be succesful.

This has an outline of our current DI intake and profile of our DI’s. It should be noted that the DI scheme often see’s some of the previous years TI’s moving through to complete a 2nd year at HA.
