Dale Cook

IMGA0560

FROM:    Trimdon, County Durham

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:

I studied Uniformed Public Services at College, and then went on to study Sport and Exercise Science at University, specializing in sports coaching.  I’m also a qualified fitness instructor.

I’ve had various jobs in multiple sectors.  I’ve worked as a groundskeeper at a golf course (they let me loose on a three-wheeled speed demon for cleaning sand bunkers!).  I’ve also been involved in catering and hospitality working in hotels, restaurants and bars (I learned to carry a lot of plates, how to perform silver service and they tried to teach me to juggle bottles!).  Following this I went to work in my first outdoor related job (more on this later) for the summer.  After the summer, I went into education working first as a teaching assistant in a college and then working in schools as a supply teacher around the North East of England.

After a few months of teaching in schools I started to miss the outdoors industry, so I applied for a summer job with High Adventure and went to Kibblestone and had a lot of fun!

PRIOR OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE:

I’ve always enjoyed sports and coaching.  It wasn’t until after my studies at university that I took an interest in outdoor activities.  I completed my first ever season as an outdoor instructor based in a castle in Northumberland.  It was here that I learned to fence, got my first experience of ‘real’ climbing and my Archery GB qualification.

After this I became a teaching assistant in a college with the Uniformed Public Services Department.  This allowed me to go out on trips with the students and get involved in various activities.  I did a lot of work with the army reserves and I also went down to the Royal Marine Commando Training Centre for a week to take part in a ‘Look at Life’ course with the students (literally the most physically demanding week of my life).

The summer after I worked in education I applied to a High Adventure Summer Camp advert, which allowed me to have another fun summer and led to me applying for the Trainee Instructor Scheme!

OTHER/GENERAL INFO:

Apart from the usual stuff like spending time with friends and family, listening to music and watching movies/TV series I like to keep myself active.  I enjoy trying new things and challenging myself.  My non-outdoor hobbies include cooking, martial arts, historical European fencing and guitar.

Sam Cooper

FROM:  Sydney, Australia

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:

JENNY FROST

20160122_131729

FROM:  Sunderland, Tyne & Wear

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:

I studied Public Services at College and went onto University, where I studied Outdoor Studies and graduated with a BSc degree.

PRIOR OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE:

I have always been outdoor orientated since I was very young, my parents would always take me on trips to place such as the Lakes.  In school, I went on a residential trip to Derwent Hill this is where I got my first taste of a few outdoor activities which instantly sparked my interest.  I then went onto College studying Public Services where I eventually decided I wanted to start working in the Outdoor Industry, which took me onto University.  I studied at the University of Cumbria and lived in Ambleside most of it, my course was mainly Ecology based so I really enjoy learning new things about the environment.  I was introduced to most of the outdoor activities and the one that stuck out the most for me was Caving…….  I literally do not stop talking about it.  After graduating, I went to work in a Multi-Activity Centre based in Northumberland, which was situated in a medieval castle. I received my GNAS Archery from this job, stayed a season and then moved on to HA.

OTHER/GENERAL INFO:

As I’ve mentioned above, I LOVE CAVING!  I also enjoy horse riding, being outside and arty stuff.  I don’t like wearing shoes very often, so may be seen walking round the centre in just socks.  I may sound like a Geordie but I’m actually a Mackem, not a good thing to get mixed up.  It’s tricky to understand my accent sometimes, especially when I’m excited.  I am used to either blank faces or people just smiling and nodding to questions I need answers to.  I’m also a wannabe ginger.  I’m very excited to start getting my qualifications at HA.

After University, I worked a Summer Camp Season with HA.

OTHER/GENERAL INFO:

I’m a keen road cyclist who is slowly converting to the dark side of mountain biking, it’s less lycra and less leg shaving!  I do a bit of pretend- running and try my best at yoga.  Although I’m two wheels obsessed, I’m looking forward to: drawing on the knowledge of the people I work with, developing my skills and being involved in as many different activities as I can whilst here at HA.

BEN SPARROW

Ben Sparrow (1)

FROM:  Dunedin, New Zealand

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor of Physical Education (BPhEd) – University of Otago, Majoring in Professional Studies and Exercise Prescription and Management.  On the side a bit of Hospitality and Barista experience at Ironic Cafe and Bar for four and a half years whilst studying.

PRIOR OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE:

Growing up as a young Kiwi consisted of plenty of outdoor family trips.  Adventurous Activities course in late 2010 and returning as a Support Instructor in 2014 for 8 days.  Many trips throughout later High School and University, including Snowshoe Tramping, Rock Climbing, Mountain Biking, Bush expeditions and Kayaking/Canoeing.  I came to the UK halfway through 2015 and first got involved with HA at Tawd Vale Camp for the full summer season.

OTHER/GENERAL INFO:

I absolutely love sport and almost all physical activity.  I played and coached Badminton very intensely for a number of years growing up and I am long overdue to get back into it!  Tennis is also a favourite and Roger Federer is the athlete I most want to have a beer with.  Also Rugby is pretty ok.

Long bush expeditions or “tramping” as it is known back in NZ, is my favourite and most missed aspect of the outdoor disciplines as the UK unfortunately doesn’t have vast wilderness to explore and get lost in.

I have acquired a fair love of travelling since I got over this side of the world and plan on seeing as much of the UK and Europe as I can, whilst i’m here.

I can’t wait to get stuck into this year at HA and get Climbing, Caving, Biking and learning back and forth with all the individuals I will have the pleasure of instructing.
