Kate

Mike from Stockport

 EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:

I went to Warwick University to study Engineering after spending a year working in an engineering test lab. I started working at HA Summer camps, and did 3 seasons of work for HA whilst I was studying. I’ve come to work at centre year round now that I’ve graduated.

PRIOR OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE:

I got a lot of tasters of loads of outdoor sports quite early on through the Scouts and really enjoyed it, I kept going with scouting as a leader for quite a long time and still help out every now and then. I took my outdoor activities a bit further outside of scouting, especially climbing and sailing. I also enjoy running, but I’m not very good at getting out very often!

Patrick from Stone, Staffordshire

Likes: Climbing, walking and being outdoors.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:

I studied countryside management at college.  I went to work on an internationally recognised county estate where they let me drive big tractors and even 3 wheeled lawnmowers!  (they aren’t as easy as they look).  I then worked for the family business installing water sprinklers on golf courses.  I soon realised it wasn’t what I wanted to do and so I applied for a summer job with High Adventure.  This allowed me to have fun all summer and led to me applying for the trainee instructor scheme!

PRIOR OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE:

My interest in the outdoors began with regular walks with my parents. I’m involved in the scouting organisation where I completed the gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and my Queen scout award and met Bear Grylls and the Duke of Wessex. I’m also a member of the Army cadets.

I’m now a DofE expedition assessor so I can quite often be found wandering around the hills trying to help DofE groups with their map and compass skills.  I worked one summer camp season at Kibblestone.

Rosie from Machynlleth, Wales

Likes: Donuts, travelling, scuba diving, sailing, sleeping and animals.

I went to uni at Chester and completed my primary school teaching degree which I’d like to go back to at some point in the future! I then went to one of High Adventure’s summer camps before starting full time at HA.

PRIOR OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE:

Prior to working at High Adventure, I’d done a bit of mountain biking, mainly over Cannock Chase, along with some canoeing and white water rafting in Canada.  I’ve also played football since I can remember!

IMGA0560

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:

I studied Uniformed Public Services at College, and then went on to study Sport and Exercise Science at University, specializing in sports coaching. I’m also a qualified fitness instructor.

I’ve had various jobs in multiple sectors.  I’ve worked as a groundskeeper at a golf course (they let me loose on a three-wheeled speed demon for cleaning sand bunkers!).  I’ve also been involved in catering and hospitality working in hotels, restaurants and bars (I learned to carry a lot of plates, how to perform silver service and they tried to teach me to juggle bottles!).  Following this I went to work in my first outdoor related job (more on this later) for the summer.  After the summer, I went into education working first as a teaching assistant in a college and then working in schools as a supply teacher around the North East of England.

After a few months of teaching in schools I started to miss the outdoors industry, so I applied for a summer job with High Adventure and went to Kibblestone and had a lot of fun!

PRIOR OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE:

I’ve always enjoyed sports and coaching.  It wasn’t until after my studies at university that I took an interest in outdoor activities.  I completed my first ever season as an outdoor instructor based in a castle in Northumberland.  It was here that I learned to fence, got my first experience of ‘real’ climbing and my Archery GB qualification.

After this I became a teaching assistant in a college with the Uniformed Public Services Department.  This allowed me to go out on trips with the students and get involved in various activities.  I did a lot of work with the army reserves and I also went down to the Royal Marine Commando Training Centre for a week to take part in a ‘Look at Life’ course with the students (literally the most physically demanding week of my life).

The summer after I worked in education I applied to a High Adventure Summer Camp advert, which allowed me to have another fun summer and led to me applying for the Trainee Instructor Scheme!

OTHER/GENERAL INFO:

Apart from the usual stuff like spending time with friends and family, listening to music and watching movies/TV series I like to keep myself active.  I enjoy trying new things and challenging myself.  My non-outdoor hobbies include cooking, martial arts, historical European fencing and guitar.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:

At school I achieved A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics.  I studied Sports and Exercise Science at University.

PRIOR OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE:

My interest in the outdoors began with regular walks, hikes and camping trips with my parents.  I was involved in the scouting organisation for a number of years and completed the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.  As well as this I’ve also been an assistant coach in road cycling and rowing. After University, I worked a Summer Camp Season with HA.

OTHER/GENERAL INFO:

I’m a keen road cyclist who is slowly converting to the dark side of mountain biking, it’s less lycra and less leg shaving!  I do a bit of pretend- running and try my best at yoga.  Although I’m two wheels obsessed, I’m looking forward to: drawing on the knowledge of the people I work with, developing my skills and being involved in as many different activities as I can whilst here at HA.
